Why You Need To Cry

Wellbeing

Share

None of us really enjoy crying, and it’s often viewed as a sign of vulnerability or weakness, but there’s a reason why we cry, and it is good for our health!

Stress Relief

Shedding tears is like an outlet for pent up emotions. We cry out of sadness, frustration and even joy! Crying allows us to release these intense feelings, and by letting it out we’re preventing an even more emotional build-up that could lead to stress and anxiety.

When we cry, endorphins are released, and endorphins are our body’s natural painkiller! This chemical response helps to alleviate both physical and emotional pain, which ends up promoting relaxation, making us feel calmer once the tears stop.

Catharsis

Crying forces us to confront and process our emotions. Letting it all out provides us with more clarity and understanding of our innermost thoughts and hardships. It’s a form of emotional cleansing! After a good cry we’re more inclined to let go of the negativity and gain a new perspective into our situation and emotions.

Self-Care

Crying is a form of self-care! Research has shown that a good cry is an effective way to soothe ourselves. When we let ourselves cry, we’re acknowledging and validating our own feelings without judgement. Letting the tears flow reminds us that it’s okay to not always be okay! We deserve kindness and understanding, especially from ourselves.

Healing

Aside from a blotchy face, blocked nose and potentially hoarse voice depending on the severity of the sob, we feel better after we cry, mentally and emotionally. Tears play a crucial role in the body’s healing process. Crying helps release toxins and reduce stress hormones, this helps promote overall wellbeing, including boosting our immune system!

It takes courage to confront our emotions and allow ourselves to be vulnerable, but we’ll be better for it in the long run. Crying is not a sign of weakness, in fact it’s a sign of strength! Tears are a natural and necessary part of being human. They’re a testament to our emotional depth and capacity for growth and healing. So, ladies, let those tears flow!
